Chelsea move for Lindelöf
22-year-old Benfica defender Victor Lindelöf is being chased by Chelsea and the Blues are willing to trigger his £25m buy-out clause, according to Portuguese newspaper Record. The Swedish centre-half started all three of his countries games at Euro 2016 but has only played 16 Primeira Liga games for Benfica since signing from Västerås SK in 2011.
He broke into the Benfica first team in January 2016 and was handed his international debut in March, quickly becoming a regular for both club and country.
The player’s agent has reportedly already informed the Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira that Chelsea are prepared to offer the €30m (£25m) necessary to trigger Lindelöf’s release clause.
Lindelöf also a capable right back
The young Swedish defender is also capable of playing right-back – a position where Antionio Conte will surely have noted needs strengthening.Serbian star Branislav Ivanovic aged badly last season and rapidly transformed from one of the best right backs in the league to one of the worst.
Captain John Terry isn’t getting any younger either and Chelsea need to breathe some fresh life into an ageing defence. Lindelöf could well be the answer.
